Let the Current Do the Work

Makassar Reef is a cleaning and feeding station in moving water. You do not swim at Manta Point — you drift over it and let the reef come to you.

Reef mantas gather over a shallow sandbar to feed and be cleaned. Sightings are common, but they depend entirely on the tide, not on luck.

  • Reef mantas here reach wingspans of about 3.5 metres.
  • Currents run 2 to 4 knots — this is a drift, not a swim.
  • The best window is roughly 08:00 to 10:00, when they feed.

In the water

How Manta Point actually works

Six things that decide whether the stop is extraordinary or a wasted hour.

Drift, do not swim

The tender drops you up-current and picks you up down-current. Fighting the flow exhausts you and achieves nothing.

Five to fifteen metres

Shallow over the sandbar, deeper off the edge. Mantas often pass within a few metres of the surface.

Keep three to five metres

Do not chase, do not touch, do not swim above them. A manta that feels crowded leaves and takes the group with it.

Morning feeding

Around 08:00 to 10:00 is when plankton concentrates and numbers are highest — sometimes ten or more animals.

Fifteen to twenty-five metres

Typical visibility. Enough to see them coming, which is most of the pleasure.

26 to 29°C

Warm enough without a wetsuit, though many boats offer one for buoyancy in the drift.

The drift

How the stop is run

Every good operator does it the same way, and the briefing is not a formality.

  1. 01

    Read the tide

The captain checks direction and strength before anyone gets wet. Wrong tide, no stop.

  2. 02

    Briefing

Distance, direction of drift, pickup signal, and what not to do. Two minutes that shape the hour.

  3. 03

    Dropped up-current

The tender puts you in ahead of the reef so the water carries you across it.

  4. 04

    Float, do not swim

Fins still, body flat, look down. Mantas approach animals that are not thrashing.

  5. 05

    Pick up and repeat

The tender collects you downstream and runs you back. Two or three passes is normal.

Can a nervous snorkeller do this?

Usually yes, with two caveats. The current is real, so a floatation vest and a guide in the water make the difference between an experience and a fright. And the drift means you cover ground fast, which is disorienting the first time. Tell the crew before you get in rather than after — every boat carries vests and every guide would rather know.

On a strong spring tide even confident swimmers get moved further than they expect. That is when good operators simply skip the stop.

The stop most often dropped

Manta Point is the first thing a fixed schedule sacrifices, because it only works on the right tide at the right hour. A day boat on a set route arrives when it arrives. A private charter can move the whole day around the tide table — which is the single strongest argument for chartering rather than joining, if mantas are why you came.

Questions

Mantas, answered

When is the best time to see mantas?

Roughly 08:00 to 10:00, when plankton concentrates and the animals feed. Numbers can reach ten or more over the shallow reef patches.

How strong is the current?

Two to four knots across Makassar Reef. That is why the technique is drift snorkelling — dropped up-current, collected down-current.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Generally yes, with a floatation vest and a guide in the water. The mantas are often near the surface over a five-metre sandbar, so you do not need to dive.

How close can I get?

Three to five metres, and never above them. Chasing or crowding a manta ends the encounter for everybody in the water.

Will my charter definitely stop here?

Not automatically. It depends on the tide, and it is the stop fixed schedules drop first. A private charter can plan the day around the tide table.

Plan around the tide

If mantas are the reason you are coming, say so. It changes which days work and how the itinerary is ordered.
