Lead Time Changes What You Pay
How far ahead you commit decides whether the boat you want is still free, and trip length quietly moves the per-night figure. Season is covered separately.
The dry season carries the calmest water and the highest rates. The boats worth wanting are held six to eighteen months out, and the shoulder months are where the value sits.

Why the good boats go early
There are not many large vessels in Labuan Bajo, and the ones with the best crews are repeat-booked. Peak dates on those go twelve to eighteen months out, often to guests who sailed the year before. Availability is the binding constraint at the top of the market — not budget, and not weather.

How length moves the per-night rate
Operators discount the marginal night because the vessel is already committed. The effect is real, and smaller than people expect.

The headline stops with nothing spare. Full published range applies — the rate does not drop yet.
5 nights
Usually discounted vs the 3-night rate
The common sweet spot. Northern park within reach and two dives a day becomes realistic.
7 nights
Lowest per night of the four
A hundred to a hundred and fifty nautical miles, twelve to fifteen stops, and an unhurried pace.
Only the day-charter and three-night figures are published rates from the 185-vessel survey. The longer-charter entries describe the direction operators quote in, not a number any of them advertises — ask for the specific per-night rate at your length rather than assuming a percentage.

What actually gets booked out
Scarcity is not evenly spread. Some things go eighteen months out; others are available next week.
Large VVIP vessels
The tightest constraint. There are few boats above twenty guests, and peak dates on them go 12 to 18 months ahead.
July and August
European and Indonesian holidays land together. Expect the least negotiating room of the year.
Christmas and New Year
Held furthest out of all, often with minimum charter lengths attached.
Shoulder months
April, May and October. Same park, materially fewer boats, and lead times of three to six months rather than twelve.
November to March
Widest availability and the softest pricing. Rougher water is the trade, not worse diving.
Last-minute
Cancellations do surface inside 60 days, because that is when balances fall due. Worth asking if your dates are flexible.
A day trip is a different product
A speedboat day charter leaves Labuan Bajo around eight and is back by five, covering three or four sites for USD 680 to 4,800 for the boat. It is not a cheap liveaboard — it is a different thing. You see Padar and Pink Beach, you do not see the park empty at dawn, and you sleep in a hotel. For one free day it is the right answer; for a holiday it is not.

When is the best time to sail Komodo?

How far ahead should I book?
Six to twelve months for most vessels, twelve to eighteen for large boats on peak dates. Shoulder months can often be held a few months out.
Is the wet season worth it?
For divers and photographers, frequently. Visibility averages 15 to 25 metres, water stays at 26 to 29°C, the islands are green and the sites are empty. Rougher passages are the real trade.

Can I get a last-minute charter?
