Silo 3 · The passage

Three Hundred Miles East

You can sail from Bali to Komodo. Most people should not — and the ones who should already know why.

The crossing is about 300 nautical miles and two to three days of open passage. A full Bali–Komodo liveaboard, crossing plus park, generally runs seven to ten days.

  • Two to three of those days are sea time, not sightseeing.
  • Itineraries are one way: board in Bali, disembark in Labuan Bajo.
  • A flight covers the same distance in about ninety minutes.

The honest version

Who the crossing is actually for

If Komodo is what you came for, fly. Ninety minutes replaces two to three days, and every hour saved is an hour in the park. The crossing makes sense for a different traveller — someone who wants the passage itself, the islands between Bali and Flores that no airport serves, and the particular quiet of being at sea with no land in sight. That is a real thing to want. It is just not the same holiday.

Operators mostly run these as repositioning voyages, moving vessels between cruising grounds. That is why the calendar is short and fixed rather than on demand.

The route

What lies between

The chain east from Bali, in the order you meet it.

Benoa or Serangan

The two Bali departure harbours. Boarding is usually mid-afternoon for an evening departure.

Lombok and the Gilis

First landfall on longer itineraries. Shallow reef, turtles, and the last reliable phone signal.

Moyo Island

Northern Sumbawa. Waterfalls and jungle pools a short walk from the beach.

Satonda

A volcanic crater holding a saltwater lake with no outlet. Nothing else on the route resembles it.

The open leg

The stretch with nothing to shelter behind, usually run overnight while you sleep.

Labuan Bajo

Landfall on Flores, and where the park itinerary begins and the crossing ends.

Shape of it

How a crossing itinerary is built

Two thirds park, one third passage, if it is built well.

  1. 01

    Board in Bali

Afternoon embarkation, evening departure. The first night is under way.

  2. 02

    Island stops east

Lombok, Moyo and Satonda break the passage into legs rather than one long haul.

  3. 03

    The overnight leg

One long stretch of open water, stood by the crew while guests sleep.

  4. 04

    Arrive in the park

Komodo National Park on day three or four, depending on total length.

  5. 05

    Disembark on Flores

Alongside in Labuan Bajo, and you fly home from Komodo Airport.

A five-day crossing leaves about a day and a half in the park; seven days leaves four. If park time matters, the extra two days buy more than the extra islands do.

Or do not

Three ways to spend the same week

Same seven nights, three very different holidays.

Fly and stay in the park

7 days in Komodo

Ninety minutes of flying, then the entire week inside the national park. The most Komodo per pound.

If the park is the point

Seven-day crossing

4 days in Komodo

Three days east through Lombok and Sumbawa, four in the park. Both halves get room.

The balanced crossing

Five-day crossing

1.5 days in Komodo

Two days of passage and a park finale. Choose it for the sea, not for the dragons.

Conditions

Is the crossing rough?

Rougher than anything inside the park, because outside the island chain there is nothing to shelter behind. In the dry months it is generally a comfortable passage on a well-found boat; between January and March it is a genuine consideration. Take something for seasickness before you feel you need it, pick a lower cabin if you are prone to it, and expect the boat to move at night.

Questions

The crossing, answered

Can you charter a yacht from Bali to Komodo?

Yes. It is roughly 300 nautical miles and two to three days of passage, usually offered as a one-way repositioning itinerary of five to ten days including park time.

How long does it take?

Two to three days for the crossing alone. A full itinerary with meaningful park time runs seven to ten days. A flight covers the same ground in about ninety minutes.

Is it rough?

It is open water, so it moves more than a park itinerary. April to October is materially more comfortable. January to March is for people who genuinely like passages.

What does it cost?

Crossings are quoted per vessel like any charter, and the Komodo fleet runs USD 1,550 to 20,000 a night across published rates. Repositioning legs are sometimes priced below a normal park week.

Should I do it?

If you want the sea, yes. If you want Komodo, fly — you will get three or four more days in the park for the same money and the same time away.

Ask which way it sails

Crossings run east and west on fixed repositioning dates. Tell us the month and we will tell you what is moving.
